Could God be forgotten?
As scientific advances launch us into surprising new ways to live better lives (free from sickness, fears, and anxieties), my book plot developing mind is always wondering what could go wrong, and how can I turn it into a story. I came across several studies in neuropsychology where scientists were able to alter human memories to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PSTD), various phobias, and anxiety. (For more details watch Nova’s, Memory Hackers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyb8Ah3jChw.)Our neuro networks are busy creating maps and links to memories designated significant enough to be stored in our long-term memory. Each time we recall a memory we strengthen the emotional connection to the memory. However, Karim Nadar of McGill University discovered that when we recollect memories, they move to a temporary malleable state. This process is call reconsolidation and explains how our memories can change slightly over time. During reconsolidation, scientists have been able to alter the links to the memory by using drugs to block norepinephrine, a chemical in the brain that deals with the fight and flight response, and cause them to “forget” or lessen the negative emotion associated with the memory. In the sequel to my manuscript, Beacon Hill, the hero Ethan Glass has an implanted chip in his brain which time releases a drug to block certain memories—specifically those associated with God, Jesus, and his religious upbringing. This got me thinking. If a drug existed that altered our memories to wipe out any association with our beliefs, could we actually forget God?I’d like to point to some scripture references to dispute this:In Romans 8:38-39 (NIV) Paul states, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (NIV).Also, Romans 1:19-20 (NIV) states, “… God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” (NIV)Even though research and technological advances are moving faster than we can understand all the implications, we can rest assured that according to scripture an all-powerful God will not be forgotten. “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31 (NIV).Let me know what you think. Is there a possible future where memories could be deleted or altered? Could we forget God?If you’d like to be informed about updates on Beacon Hill and other releases, sign up for my newsletter here: https://lorridudley.com/mc4wp-form-preview/
